In a tragic incident in the quiet residential neighborhood of Manoa, Honolulu, a 46-year-old chiropractor, Paris Oda, is believed to have fatally stabbed his wife and three children, ages 17, 12, and 10, before taking his own life. The Honolulu Police Department discovered the bodies at the family home following a report of disturbance. While the police have not officially released the names of the deceased, neighbors have identified the Odas as the affected family. The cause of Paris Oda’s death has not been disclosed.
According to local reports, Naoko Oda was a stay-at-home mother. The family resided in the upper portion of the house, with tenants occupying the lower unit. These tenants were reportedly away in Japan at the time of the incident. The nature and location of the discovery of the bodies within the home have not been specified by the authorities.
This incident marks one of the deadliest murders in Honolulu in nearly 25 years. At a press conference, HPD Lt. Deena Thoemmes stated, “Based on the evidence and the investigation thus far, it appears the adult male killed the female and the juveniles with a knife,” which was recovered at the scene. Early reports indicate an argument occurred in the home on the morning of the tragedy.
Police initially responded to an anonymous call about a disturbance but found no one to answer the door. A subsequent call led them to the grim discovery. “They left because it was an anonymous caller, and there was no one there to meet them,” explained Lt. Thoemmes regarding the initial response. The situation escalated upon a follow-up visit when officers were able to enter the home and ascertain the magnitude of the tragedy.
The local community has expressed shock and concern over the incident, with neighbors describing the Odas as a typical, festive family who would decorate their home for holidays. The Honolulu Police Department has confirmed that the suspect is among the deceased and have indicated that the killings do not appear to be a random act. The investigation into the motive is ongoing, as stated by HPD Chief Joe Logan. A significant police presence and medical examiner vans were reported at the scene as investigations continued.
